 MartinClassroom Connection: Mrs. Martin
This month, Mrs. Martin's first grade class is reading Charlotte's Web out loud.  One day last week, the children were surprised by their very own web in the classroom!  The kids were so excited to see what the words said - some pig!  When the book is complete, the students will participate in a culminating activity with a Charlotte's Web celebration day! The students will dress up as their favorite character from the book and watch the movie

 dropoffNEW Branch Drop off Procedure
For families arriving by car, parking on the East side of Aberdeen (in front of the Branch) IS NOT PERMITTED after 8:45 am.  This is a Bus Lane and must be cleared by 8:45 am.  Two buses arrive at 8:45 and need the space to safely drop off our students.

You may park on the other side of Aberdeen (across from the Branch) or in the parking lot on the side of the Branch (located in the alley close to Adams Street) or on the street around the corner on Jackson.  Please be respectful of this policy as our students safety is at risk.
Other options include:
  • Walking to school
  • Drop off at the Main Building between 8:15 am and 8:40 am and students can take the bus to the Branch.
  • Thank you for keeping our students safe!
 walkathonWalkathon Update!
Friends of Skinner West would like to thank all parents, students, friends, families and staff for another successful Walkathon! This year, we surpassed our goal by $10,000 and raised $65,000!  We would like to extend a huge thank you to our local businesses, Mathnasium, Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Mark Allen Realty,  Michigan Avenue Real Estate, & Pepsi for their continued support of Skinner West.  We are excited to announce the five winning classrooms which raised the most money and will receive an ice cream party and $500 to spend on items for their classroom: Ms. McKenna ($6,000!!), Ms. Brown, Ms. Ward, Ms. Priola and Mr. Merkin.  We have decided to grant an additional 5 classrooms the $500 prize as well: Mr. Linke, Ms. Fisher, Ms. Martin, Ms. DeJulio and Ms. Rosenzweig.  As runner-up, Ms. Daigle has also been awarded a math party generously donated by Mathnasium.  Thank you again Skinner West families!

Cameron
Spotlight: Cameron Mwachullah
Cameron Mwachullah, a Skinner West 5th grader, enjoyed one exceptional week! He was a Ball Kid during the world class international indoor men's Laver Cup tennis tournament held September 21-23, 2018. This extraordinary opportunity allowed Cameron to meet the world's top men's tennis players, former tennis champion Rod Laver as well as Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emmanuel. While speaking with the Mayor off court, Cameron mentioned he attended Skinner West.  To his surprise, the Mayor offered to visit him at his school one day - and that he did. On Wednesday, September 26, Mayor Emanuel made an unannounced special visit to Room 220 to see Cameron, his classmates and their teacher, Mrs. Rosenzweig. Cameron, an avid tennis player, was also selected to represent his club, Love To Serve, Inc. Tennis and Education Foundation, at the Laver Cup Gala.

Kids' Haircuts Benefit Skinner West
During October, bring this flier into Snippets and they'll donate $5 to Skinner West PTO for each kid's haircut. This is a great opportunity to get ready for school pictures and help our school at the same time.
